First thing first:

If you still think $100 is too much for stocking your home gym, think about what you would spend at a regular gym. The monthly average for a gym membership is around $40 and if you’re getting personal training forget it! The cost automatically goes up.

To help you save and get the best for your buck the following items can be used to rid you from the burden of a membership, registrations, renewals, contracts and personal training fees.

1. Dumbbells

Most people that workout usually do it to feel and look good. Although there are some people, who adopt working out for health reasons the higher percentage of people that work out do it for their own personal reasons (i.e., to look good and feel great). For the sake of working out efficiently biceps, chest, and triceps (upper body workouts) are a must.

Dumbbells can be very expensive but keep in mind muscles or toning doesn’t necessarily have to equate to heavy iron. Invest in some 10 lb. dumbbells and up your reps as needed.

You can purchase a pair of 10 lb. dumbbells for $18 at your local Wal-Mart. Dumbbells will help with toning, and although most people use them for upper body workouts, you can also use them for lower body workouts; thus providing yourself with full body workouts at your leisure.

2. Resistance bands

These bands can cost about $19. You can use them for many exercises from squats to leg lifts, strength training, and many different arm exercises.
Resistance bands are extremely helpful when it comes to strengthening and toning.

3. Stability ball

The stability ball is lightweight and easy to toss around. It’s useful for incline exercises, core exercises, back extensions, and flexibility.

Stability balls are used for almost everything. An appropriately sized stability ball is more than enough for full body workout.

The balls are very inexpensive, ranging from as low as $6 to $30 depending on the size. The online market is a great place to buy these balls; however, they can also be purchased from most retailers that sell fitness equipment.

4. Jump Rope

Last and not least is the jump rope. Jumping rope is a great way to keep your heart pumping. Jumping rope will serve as both cardio and strengthening. Some may even consider it as a leg workout too!

My favorite feature about the jump rope is that, even at a moderate rate, one can burn anywhere from 10 to 16 calories per minute (and if you’re an avid calorie counter I’m sure you’ll appreciate that fun fact). Can you just imagine how many calories you can burn in ten minutes of jumping rope? That’s right; you do the math!

Jump ropes are relatively inexpensive; however, there are some jump ropes out there that are running the same rate as a pair of sneakers. But lucky for you that I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You can grab a jump rope (at most retailers-Ross, Wal-Mart, Target, etc.) for around $8.

There you have it, an inexpensive, yet effective list of gym items that can be used to deck out your very own home gym and it’s only costing you less than $100! More importantly, you’ll even have a few dollars to spare!

If you’re not a shopper, you can find most, if not all, of these items online. Other items you may want to think about adding to your list would include a yoga mat, an ab roller and a doorway chin-up bar (which are also very inexpensive).

Staying fit might may take a lot of hard work and dedication, but it doesn’t have to be expensive!
